Questions about the episodes

Ok I have two questions and i'm not sure where to put em. (I had a look but nothing seemed appropriate)

The first is about s1e6 with the guy at the start and end of the episode watching the cars driving down (up?) the hills in the dark. Anyone know the significance of this?

And the second is the panto episode. Why is it that they are having auditions and showing the panto after Christmas? Where I come from (West of Scotland) we have them in the run up to Christmas

The old man at the beginning of the episode is the incomprehensible farmer Elijah. He is watching a shooting star which, I'm assuming, is the spirit of his dead cow. Aw.

The delayed panto (again I'm assuming) is placed after Christmas only because Jennifer Saunders finds it amusing (similar to when the church council is trying to schedule the Valentine's Day event in VofD) -- and I agree.

Edit: having now re-watched the ending, it is cars -- not stars. Although Kate Rusby is singing about stars. At the beginning there was one car being watched by an unkempt Elijah. The ending shows a "community" of cars watched by a very much cared for Elijah. Very subtle our girl can be.

There was something about someone seeing OVNIs, I think that's what the cars scene means. You learn they're just cars, not the alleged OVNIs.

those cars are the same cars that are shown when the police officer tells those guys to stay behind him at 5 miles an hour.. he drops them off one by one cuz they're drunk.. and can't get into accidents that way... but since they're in the country.. they can't get a taxi easily or get someone to come and get them and leave the car behind.. so this is the way they take care of it.... as someone said.. they're being looked after.. just as elijah is..

I loved that little scene... it's quite touching:D

If you watch Series 1, episode 1, at the beginning when they're praying in church - is that Beattie seated a couple of rows behind Dawn?

SORRY - it's episode 2.

No. But I do like the part where Caroline uses Eileen's hanky, then puts it back.

A lost opportunity for a 'Caroline dragging one or more of her children somewhere' scene.

They are absolutely what made the show! I also think it's why it got the criticisms that it got - because those that criticised it were looking for 'obvious' jokes and there was so much endearing subtleness in it.

True true. The more I watch it the more of those little things I notice - and so the more I love it. Most people watch it once when it's first on TV and so if they don't 'get it' straight away, it's dismissed. An almighty shame.

Somebody bring me something deep fried and smothered in chocolate.

These lovely ladies with the big tits have been making me laugh for more than 25 years. Ricky Gervais, who is a big tit, has made me laugh once.

J&J is such a great show. I can't believe it wasn't renewed. How many reality shows can there be--so many of them are mean-spirited & to me, not enjoyable at all. I think it's a shame that the show was not allowed to continue.

Yes - you're right there. Oh well - we've vented our anger about the BBC for that decision. So I guess we just enjoy more and more viewing of those wonderful 3 series :)

Love that scene with Elijah watching the cars - you realize how alone he is now, watching the other lads who've been hanging out at the pub together, all driving home, but at the same time it's a lovely little insight into the community, all taking care of one another, just like the Guild ladies took care of him...

Now here's another question:

What is Katie saying all the time when she's offering people cakes and such? Is she saying "Caking!" or "Cake cake!" What is that??

Not sure. I live in NZ and people do it here. It's not something everyone does. It's like trying to make things more important or interesting than they are. So it can be a bit snobby and arrogant :D
